Youth Justice Committee
Youth Justice Committee programming is a diversion option for youth who have committed certain offenses and provides an alternative to formal charges or court proceedings. Through the facilitation of a restorative justice circle, youth, their guardian, the victim and trained volunteers come together to discuss harm done and create a mutually agreed upon response to the offense.
Through the development of individualized measures/sanctions, YJC programming is intended to:
- hold youth accountable for their actions
- help youth understand the impact of their actions on the victim/community
- encourage the acknowledgement and repair of harm done
- provide meaningful and timely intervention
Upon successful completion, a recommendation will be made for the charges to be revoked by the police or withdrawn by the court.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for this service, youth must be 12-17 years of age at the time of the offence, accept responsibility for the charge, and be willing to participate in community based sanctions.
Cost:
There is no fee for this program.
